Summary

Rayne is a normal high school girl. She gets good grades, has troublemakers for friends, and… a mystery filled past and ancestry. Rayne has heard stories of her ancestors and couldn’t believe them, no matter how much she wanted too, until a large new family of eight mysterious people came to town. The Montés. Four of which transfer to Rayne’s small high school and two to her little brothers.
After meeting her new peers, strange things begin happening to Rayne and her brother, Oliver; she has weird dreams of the supposedly youngest of the high school newbies, Syrus, and starts seeing frightening images. Her brother is having dreams of the past, present, and supposed future, along with knowing everything that’s happened to Rayne, including the things she doesn’t remember. Not only that, but his sweet, scared domineer changes drastically, creating problems within the family, and with Rayne’s own life.
An accident occurs and puts Rayne in a bizarre and unexplainable coma for almost a week, causing her to have more dreams of strange people. The same night she returns home from the hospital, she is awakened and kidnapped. Later to find out it was by the same people-or in this case animals- from her dreams and their leader isn’t happy with the towns’ newest family. What did the Montés do that angered him? And why does he seem to follow Rayne? What will the terrifying new visitors do to get back at them?
As Rayne’s feelings for the two Montés brothers grow, the changes she’s going through become even more painful and uncontrollable. She does things to save others, even though she didn’t know she could. And when her kidnapper comes to pay her a friendly visit, Rayne discovers more than she wanted too, and it won’t be the last time.
To Rayne’s complete and utter surprise, the Montés and the other band of new comers are not the only things that start showing up that she didn’t think existed. When Brom, a “family friend”, swoops in, literally, and proves that “there is much more in this world than what you were able to see” Rayne starts trying to “see” what she wasn’t able to before. But could what she sees be too much for her to handle along with all the disturbing changes happening to her?
With everything that’s happened and what’s to come, Rayne begins asking herself if the tales could be true, and what she has to do with them, or if the legends are leaving something important out.
Will Rayne be able to handle the enormous amount of pressure placed on her, not only by the two Montés boys and the leader of the invading band of kidnappers, but by an entirely new world? Will she be able to tackle the problems that arise from the one thing she once wanted so badly to exist? The one thing she worries about most of all… Will she be able to cope with the truth about herself?

Prologue

It seems almost unfair. The way all of this turned out, that is. Four months ago I was living a normal life. I had normal friends and a normal family. I was happily anticipating my 20th birthday. Only one more year till I could legally drink. I only had those four months left until then. Today is my birthday, and I am nowhere near happy about it.

I never thought I’d spend my big two-zero huddled up in the fetal position in my closet, listening to a battle raging in the alley behind my apartment and fearing for my ethereal life. I never even believed in the ethereal until today. Not until about twenty minutes ago. Not until three of them came bursting through my windows trying to rip my head off, stick it on a pike and take it upstairs to their head honcho.

I’d like to know who the hell ever wrote about their kind being good. If I ever find them, I’ll kill ‘em. Complete false advertising. They’re horrible, evil drones that have no mind of their own. It’s like they’re puppets. An insane lunatics playthings.

My rescuer, he’s the only one I could ever believe to really be good. The only one I could truly believe was an angel sent from Heaven to help me. These monsters, with no individualism, could never, ever, make me believe in a good God.

It was four months before my 20th birthday when all of this started. When he came, tearing me from my life, and thrusting me into this place he calls Hell. It was four months ago today, when I first met Azazel, the Fallen Angel, and the reincarnation of Adam.

It was four months ago when he broke into my house and told me that I was the reincarnation of Eve, the women who ate from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden. That I had to save the Fallen and all of humanity from being wiped out by God himself.

The Cursed Blood

The Cambion Children Series

Book I

Prelude

The alley they had entered into from the street before, which had been purged of light, was even darker and even mustier than either of them would have liked. It wasn’t necessarily something they had a choice in though; this was the charge that was given to them. Axel couldn’t help thinking it was his punishment, and getting stuck with a Nerve rubbed him the wrong way to start with.

The boys stayed close to the ground as they made their way past the crusted stone of the mortared grey walls on either side, their shoes kicking up decayed bodies of various kinds from trash piles. It wasn’t the most disgusting scenario Axel had ever been placed in, but he still didn’t find it pleasant. Axel slipped back, letting his black haired companion take the lead. He knew the Nathanial boy would be able to act before he could. What with the Nerve’s lack of control, however, Axel also knew he’d only have a moment to react himself.

With the mouth of the alley just ahead of them, Nathanial gingerly picked his way through the death and rot at his feet, trying not to alert any possible threats. Axel, even in this darkness, could see the sweat glinting off his partner’s forehead, his dark hair sticking to his face. Axel had always thought himself a good judge of others emotional state and it was obvious that this boy, this Nerve, wasn’t just afraid of what they were hunting.

He’s afraid of me. Axel thought, chuckling darkly to himself. But, that was no surprise to him. Most people at the Cambion Institute feared him. Not just him though. They feared all Cerebrals. Feared their power and instability. They feared for their lives, scared that the Cerebrals will be the death of them. We will be the death of ourselves. He’d always wanted to say it out loud. He’d wanted to tell everyone so they wouldn’t be afraid of all the Cerebrals. At least, the ones that need not be feared. Axel had since lost interest in gaining friends though. He’s become too used to being rejected and ostracized to care about others anymore.

Nathanial and Axel now approached the sallow yellow light of the street beyond the alley, sweat pooling at the other boy’s collarbone. Axel readied his pencil-like dagger as his partner exited the alley, preparing himself for the few seconds Nathanial could distract their pray. Smoothing his salt and peppered hair back out of his face, Axel stepped out to stand beside his dusky haired companion. He knew neither of them wanted to work with the other, but there was no disobeying the Master. It was simply a matter of setting aside ones pride, which was pretty hard for him to do. Axel hated Nerves. Really, he hated everybody.

With a shriek from Nathanial, Axel’s eyes began to blur, fading into blindness. He’d known this would happen from the start. The stupid boy whom he’d been forced to work with was so focused on making sure Axel couldn’t kill him that he’d used his ability on him instead of the monster in front of them.

“Wrong target, dumbass.” Axel snapped, rubbing at his eyes furiously. Quickly, the boy corrected himself and Axel’s vision returned. It wasn’t soon enough though. The nasty creature lurched towards Nathanial, mouth gaping, exposing multiple rows of serrated teeth. Its white fleshy body resembled that of a maggot, but from its sides grew eight elongated spider legs and a set of scorpion-like pincers just before them. It’s a Scavenger Demon. The alley was probably the thing’s home.

“It’s not working!” Nathanial screamed, trying to fend off the demon’s assaults.

“It’s already blind, boy.” Axel yelled back. “Try numbing his sense of touch.” As it left his lips, the demon’s body lost some mobility and its attacks became careless.

“Where’s the girl?” Nathanial shouted at the demon. “Why do you search for her?” It was a lame excuse for a distraction, Axel thought as his unfortunate partner strengthened his grip on the demon’s movement. It did nothing but shriek in response. The Scavengers where never known for their thrilling conversational skills. This was his chance; the boy’s ability would only last a few moments. Grasping his thin dagger steadily, Axel slashed open his wrist and rolled the blade in his blood, drenching it. Then, he began to draw.

Summary

Months after Aison’s death Rayne is still searching for his killer, with no success. During her desperate search to bring peace to herself and the Alphaios she grows ever closer to their leader, Theron, whom, until recently, was trying to kill Rayne to get his revenge on the Montés boys. Even though his feeling for her seem true, Rayne can’t seem to bring herself to care for him that way, not when both Marcus and Syrus have chosen her as their mate as well. The distance between her and the Montés boys grows further with every passing day, thanks to their refusal to even talk to her. Ever since Rayne saved Syrus the night of the attack at her house, none of them will speak to her, which leads Rayne to think she might have killed him. Alkippe and Zephyra, the two much more friendly girls from the Alphaios Clan, have become attached to Rayne’s hip, only leaving her home, and her classes, when she demands them to do so. Enyo has yet to show herself since she left to dig up whatever she could on Annalynn, the Shadow Demon Halfer that’s been pretending to be Rayne’s best friend.  Rayne’s Pure Blood Vampire sister, Lilith, hasn’t shown her face since the day they met, when she caused Rayne to lose Aison. Leandros, who was the one that saved Aison when he was still human, now holds a grudge against Rayne because she let Aison die, and Oliver, Rayne’s little brother,  is never home because of the Alphaios girls hanging around constantly.

When things finally seem that they’re turning around, a new family member that Rayne never knew existed shows up with news of an Immortal serial killer. Shortly after, more Immortals are found dead near The Glass’s barrier, and Larallif is weakened after the barrier between the Human World and the Immortals World is cracked. With the situation more dire than before, and both worlds in danger of a mystery murderer more powerful than anything they’ve ever seen, Rayne must visit the Tahvo, the five most powerful beings of the Immortals World, and the Law that rules it. To stop the killer, Rayne will have to make a choice. Hope that whatever the monster wants isn’t worth the effort and it gives up, or go to the prison that holds the most ruthless, powerful, insanity-stricken serial killer ever to walk between the worlds and set him free. Only a Pure Blood can break the seal of his bindings, and none of Rayne’s family is stupid enough to do it. Is Rayne willing to set another monster even more frightening than the one that’s threatening the stability of both worlds free upon the helpless beings that inhabit them?
